TENS unit for pain

Ugh.  I know pain is needed (if we didn’t have pain, we could seriously hurt ourselves).  But, living with pain can be hard.  And why is it, you hurt yourself on a weekend???

So, a couple of the latest weekends, I have wrenched my back.  I was in tears.  What did I do??  My solution is PRaT—Pray, Rest and Tens.  You do a LOT of praying, rest your back, and use a TENS unit.

My dad has VERY bad back problems, many surgeries on his back, as well as arthritis in the spine.  Lots of pain.  He was informed of using a TENS unit by the physical therapist.  He, then in turn, told me about them.

This last weekend, we were out on a trail, and I wrenched my back.  I did a LOT of praying.  Rested my back, and slapped the sticky pads of the TENS unit on my back.  It really helps!!!

Let me interject here.  I have a friend, whose back has been giving her fits for over a week!  She had been to the chiropractor 3 times in that week.  On Sunday, she was back in to the chiropractor!!  I told her about the TENS unit, and she borrowed mine on Monday.  Tonight, her husband thanked me for getting his wife back to normal.  AW!!!!  So sweet!!

Now, I am NOT a doctor, and I am NOT giving out diagnoses.  I’m just telling you what has worked for me, and some others I know.  Last year, my hubby was having lots of back pain, as well as sciatic pain.  This worked for him!  He would preach with the TENS unit on.

I like this machine, as it has the carrying case, as well as will hold up to 2 sets of pads.  You need to use the pads in sets of 2, to run the current.  What it does, is send little electrical stimulants to contract your muscles, and I don’t know why, but it helps relax your muscles.

It’s not just for backs!  But, sore necks (not throat, as it could constrict your airway), arms, shoulders, legs, etc.

How I use it, is hook up the sticky pads to the wires, and attach the sticky pad to the part that hurts.  Put another sticky pad on the opposite side.  The physical therapist also said you can use 4 on your back (creating an X).  Then, turn the TENS unit on, and start at the lowest setting.  What I do is turn it up, until I have a mild discomfort, and then turn it down 1 setting.  You don’t want it to hurt!  These are nice, as if you have more pain while moving, you can turn the TENS unit up, and have a bit more mobility.

There are some people who should NOT use a TENS unit (i.e. those with pacemaker/defibrillator). So, PLEASE check with your doctor!!!
